High School and Bank Workshop Testimonials

“I want to commend Dr. Herm Davis, who has given seminars to college bound students and their parents here at the Takoma Park Maryland Library for the past eleven years. They have always been extremely popular – especially as the intricacies of applying for college financing assistance have evolved over the years. Dr. Davis addresses the FAFSA, applying for scholarships, and other topics in a straightforward and clear way. When my own daughter was applying to colleges, his advice was sound and reassuring. I would recommend him very highly as a consultant – from both a personal and professional perspective.”

“It was a great pleasure and a true honor to visit with you a few weeks agao during my participation in the Boys Nation program. I cannot thank you enough for the kindness and generosity that you extended toward me and my fellow delegates during our stay in Washington. Your presentation on financial aid certainly provided us with a great deal of information that will prove to be extremely useful for us in the near future. Your expertise and guidance in this area meant much to us, and wil, no doubt, increase our ability to receive financial assistance for college. You certainly did not have to spend the time that you did with us, be we are so gratefule that you did. Your generosity and kindness truly made our time in Washint, “a week to shapea lifetime,” and I thank you for your continued support of the American Legion Boys Nation program as well as your friendship with young people as myself….”

“I am so happy to have found you. I was a student at Montgomery College 1973-1976 and worked for you at Financial Aide as a work-study. I came from a family with a very low economic status, and a long history of fear and anxiety about education. I was a first generation high school graduate. My high school career was mediocre, and in addition to not having the financial resources for college, I also did not have the grades. You met with my mother and helped me get accepted into school and then you not only found funding for me to attend school, you also gave me a job. At MC, I learned to enjoy school and gained confidence in myself. I then enrolled at Colorado State University and received my BA in social work and my M.Ed in adult and community education. I created a proposal for a new Center at the University, creating the Center for Service-Learning & Volunteer Programs, which I directed for 19 years. I now am a development officer for CSU and I work with many alum to establish scholarships for today’s students.

I often think back on the role you played in my life. You took a chance on me. Because of the opportunities you made available, I have had a fulfilling career in higher education and raised two children who embrace and value education. Our 25 year old daughter just finished her masters as a National Science Fellow and recently received a Fulbright to study in Mexico and our 18 year old son just graduated high school with honors and is headed to college this fall. The ripple effect of your leadership and generosity has been significant Dr. Davis, and I want to tell you how much I appreciate all that you did for me. There was a woman employed there then- I think her name was Marilyn Brown. She was nurturing and consistently found ways to celebrate my small successes. When I left, she gave me a beautiful platter that had been used in the office for events, and it has been our Easter platter used every year since. When we make our traditional bunny cake and serve it on the platter, I tell our kids again about the opportunity and sense of family you all created for me and how important it is to always pay it forward in life. If you have have contact info for Ms. Brown, I would love to reach out to her as well.

I made a small gift to Montgomery College in your honor, but more importantly please accept my deepest thanks and appreciation.  It’s great to know you are still helping students and families navigate the process of financing their education and creating the promise of the future.”
